The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) recently awarded its “Excellence in Care Dementia Program of Distinction” status to the memory care unit at The Academy at Bella Vista in Boulder, Colorado for achieving AFA’s national standard of excellence for facilities that provide care to individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or related illnesses.

The Academy at Bella Vista is the 17th in the nation to earn this national designation. AFA believes its comprehensive set of standards reflect the essential components of quality dementia care. Introduced in 2006, Excellence in Care is a program in which AFA-trained Excellence in Care specialists conduct on-site evaluations and work side-by-side with dementia care settings nationwide to comply with its standards and for ongoing performance improvement. The evaluation includes assessing a setting’s physical environment, safety procedures, program activities and training for staff and families.

The Alzheimer's Foundation of America was founded by a consortium of organizations to fill the gap that existed on a national level to assure quality of care and excellence in service to individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and to their caregivers and families. AFA unites more than 1,200 member organizations from coast-to-coast that are dedicated to meeting the educational, social, emotional and practical needs of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and their caregivers and families. Under AFA's umbrella, these organizations collaborate on education, resources, program design and implementation, fundraising campaigns, and advocacy—all resulting in better care for those affected by the disease.

After researching memory care homes for a family member, the co-managing directors of The Academy retirement community in Boulder took on the challenge of combining the benefits of small, family-style group care homes and the conveniences and services offered by large facilities. The result of their effort is Bella Vista, a 10-person secure memory care home that is the "little sister" of The Academy. Bella Vista has the advantages of being able to share in the many amenities offered by The Academy, including its 12-passenger van with wheelchair lift, exercise instructor, community life director, and a wonderful food service team that prepares special buffets and holiday meals for residents and families, enabling them to get to know each other and the caregivers on a personal level. Bella Vista is committed to providing the personal touches and intimacy of a small home along with the benefits of affiliation with The Academy.
